Choosing the right strength

What MGO or UMF should I buy?

For daily wellness use, UMF 10 to UMF 15 (MGO 263 to MGO 514) is the sweet spot. UMF 5 is too mild to feel a difference. UMF 20 and above (MGO 829+) is for therapeutic use, sore throats, wound care, and is priced accordingly. There is no benefit to UMF 25 over UMF 20 for daily use.

Is UMF 10 actually different from UMF 5?

Yes. UMF 10 has roughly 4 times the methylglyoxal of UMF 5 (MGO 263 vs MGO 83). Antibacterial activity scales non-linearly with MGO concentration, so the gap in real-world potency is meaningful. UMF 5 honey is closer to a high-quality table honey than to therapeutic manuka.

Which manuka honey is the best value?

Run any jar through the price-per-MGO calculator. The cheapest jar by sticker price is rarely the cheapest by gram of methylglyoxal. As a rule of thumb, UMF 15 from a direct-to-consumer brand often beats UMF 20 from a retail-marked-up jar on cost-per-gram of MGO.

Spotting fakes

How do I know if a jar is real manuka honey?

Look for a UMF logo with a license number you can verify on umf.org.nz, or an MGO rating from a brand with a documented testing partner. If the label says only "Active 12+" or "Premium" with no UMF or MGO number, treat it as suspect. Real manuka comes from New Zealand or, in small volumes, Australia.

How to spot counterfeit honey

Can manuka honey be made outside New Zealand?

A small amount of authentic manuka comes from Australia, where Leptospermum species also grow. New Zealand defends the trademark internationally, so jars labelled manuka are legally required to come from a Leptospermum source. Anything labelled manuka from outside New Zealand or Australia should be treated with scepticism.

What does KFactor mean? Is it the same as UMF?

KFactor is Wedderspoon's in-house grade. It measures pollen content, not antibacterial activity. KFactor 16 is not equivalent to UMF 16 or MGO 263. KFactor honey can be authentic manuka, but the number tells you nothing about potency.

How to use it

How much manuka honey should I take per day?

For daily wellness, 1 to 2 teaspoons is enough. For an active sore throat, 1 teaspoon every few hours, held in the mouth before swallowing. There is no published toxicity threshold but more is not better. Manuka honey is still ~80% sugar by weight.

Daily dosage guide

Should I take manuka honey on an empty stomach?

Either way works. On an empty stomach, the antibacterial compounds reach the gut faster. With food, the honey buffers against blood-sugar spikes. For sore throats, take it neat and let it coat the throat.

Can I cook with manuka honey?

You can, but heat above 40°C degrades the methylglyoxal and burns off the floral notes. For therapeutic use, take it cold or add to warm (not hot) drinks. For cooking, the antibacterial value is largely lost, so use a cheaper honey unless flavour matters.

Storage and shelf life

Does manuka honey expire?

Honey does not spoil at typical room temperature. The MGO content actually rises for the first 12 to 24 months as DHA converts to MGO, then plateaus. After about 5 years, HMF rises and the honey loses potency. Store sealed at room temperature, away from sunlight.

Should manuka honey be refrigerated?

No. Refrigeration encourages crystallisation and slows the DHA-to-MGO conversion. Keep the jar at room temperature with the lid sealed.

My manuka honey crystallised. Is it bad?

Crystallisation is natural and does not affect quality. Warm the jar gently in a water bath at 35 to 40°C until the crystals dissolve. Avoid microwaves and boiling water, both degrade MGO.

Safety

Is manuka honey safe for dogs?

In small amounts, yes. Manuka honey is sometimes used topically on minor wounds in dogs and can soothe a dog's sore throat in a few drops. Do not give honey to puppies under 1 year (botulism risk) and avoid in diabetic dogs. Always check with your vet before treating a sick animal.

Is manuka honey safe during pregnancy?

Yes for adults. Honey is on the standard pregnancy-safe list. The botulism warning applies only to infants under 12 months, where the immature gut allows Clostridium botulinum spores to germinate.

Can babies under 1 have manuka honey?

No. Like any honey, manuka may contain Clostridium botulinum spores that can cause infant botulism in babies under 12 months. The MGO content does not change this risk.

I have a bee allergy. Can I eat manuka honey?

Bee venom allergy is separate from honey allergy. True honey allergy is rare and usually triggered by pollen residue. If you have a known pollen or bee venom allergy, talk to an allergist before adding manuka to your routine.

Versus other honeys

Is manuka honey better than regular honey?

For antibacterial activity, yes. Manuka has roughly 100 times the methylglyoxal of regular honey. For taste, sweetness, or general nutrition, regular honey is comparable. The price gap (10x or more) is justified only if you want the antibacterial action.

Manuka vs regular honey

Is raw honey the same as manuka honey?

No. Raw means unheated and unfiltered. Manuka means produced from Leptospermum scoparium nectar. Most premium manuka is also raw, but raw honey from clover or wildflower is not manuka.

How does manuka compare to Greek thyme honey or Yemeni sidr?

Both have measurable antibacterial activity but neither matches manuka's methylglyoxal levels. Manuka remains the most studied medicinal honey, with the largest published evidence base.
