Cost per gram of MGO is the price of the jar divided by how many grams of methylglyoxal it contains. Lower is better value, the cheap-jar trap on this number is paying less per jar but far more per unit of the active compound.

Why New Zealand origin matters for Mānuka
Mānuka honey is produced from the nectar of the Mānuka tree (Leptospermum scoparium), which is native to New Zealand and parts of southeastern Australia. Both produce real Mānuka. Only New Zealand operates a national regulatory standard, the MPI (Ministry for Primary Industries) Mānuka Honey Definition, which sets chemical and DNA-marker requirements for the "monofloral Mānuka" label.
Australia produces high-quality Mānuka but lacks an equivalent national regulatory framework. Most consumer-facing Mānuka labels in the US and UK markets refer to New Zealand origin specifically.
The certifying bodies
Two organizations matter for verifying New Zealand Mānuka:
- MPI (Ministry for Primary Industries): Sets the legal definition of monofloral Mānuka honey for export. Tests four chemical markers (3-phenyllactic acid, 2'-methoxyacetophenone, 2-methoxybenzoic acid, 4-hydroxyphenyllactic acid) plus a Mānuka pollen DNA marker. Mandatory for Mānuka-labelled exports.
- UMFHA (UMF Honey Association): Trade body that licenses the UMF certification mark. Tests for leptosperin, MGO, DHA, and HMF. Voluntary, but a stronger consumer trust signal.
What this list filters for
Country of origin: New Zealand. All brands here are headquartered in New Zealand and source from New Zealand apiaries. The list excludes "blends" that mix New Zealand and Australian honey under a "Mānuka" label, as well as "Mānuka-style" or "Mānuka-flavoured" products from non-Leptospermum sources.
Geographic regions within New Zealand
The major Mānuka honey regions in New Zealand are:
- East Cape (North Island): Higher average MGO levels; remote, mostly indigenous land.
- Northland: Year-round Mānuka with strong DHA expression.
- Coromandel and Bay of Plenty: Established commercial production; brands like Comvita have major operations here.
- Marlborough Sounds (top of South Island): Smaller volume, distinctive flavor profiles.
Most premium UMF 20+ Mānuka comes from East Cape and Northland sources.
Common questions
Is Australian Mānuka real Mānuka?
Yes, if it is from a Leptospermum species. Australia has multiple Leptospermum species producing genuine Mānuka honey. The difference is regulatory, not biological.
Why does the MPI definition matter to me as a buyer?
It is the legal export floor. A jar labelled "Mānuka honey" exported from New Zealand has been tested against the MPI definition. Without that, the label has no legal meaning in New Zealand and could mean almost anything internationally.
Is "Mānuka" with the macron different from "Manuka"?
Same word. "Mānuka" is the Māori spelling and is increasingly used by New Zealand brands as a sign of cultural respect for the indigenous origins of the honey.
