UMF vs KFactor: the rating-system difference

This comparison is unusual because the two brands use different rating systems. Manuka Health is UMFHA-certified, with UMF and MGO numbers on every jar. Wedderspoon does not carry UMF certification; its KFactor system is proprietary and emphasises pollen content and traceability rather than antibacterial activity.

What this means for a buyer: the table above shows MGO directly comparable for Manuka Health. Wedderspoon does not publish MGO numbers under the KFactor system, which makes head-to-head antibacterial-activity comparison harder.

What KFactor measures

KFactor 16 indicates the honey is monofloral by Wedderspoon's pollen-counting standard. The five KFactor pillars are: Non-GMO Project Verified, Raw and unpasteurized, Traceable from hive to home, Sourced and packed in New Zealand, and Free of antibiotics and pesticides. Notably absent: an antibacterial-activity measurement comparable to MGO or NPA.

Which should you buy?

If you want a verified MGO number to make antibacterial claims, Manuka Health is the clearer choice. If you want raw, unpasteurised, monofloral Mānuka with full New Zealand traceability and you are not optimising for the highest possible MGO, Wedderspoon is.

Both meet the MPI Mānuka Honey Definition for monofloral. They are both real Mānuka. They just measure different attributes.

Frequently asked

Is KFactor as trustworthy as UMF?

The certifications measure different things. UMF certifies antibacterial activity (via MGO, leptosperin, DHA, HMF). KFactor certifies monofloral status and traceability. Both are legitimate; they answer different questions.

Can I convert KFactor to UMF or MGO?

Not directly. KFactor does not measure MGO content, so there is no conversion table. If you specifically want a verified MGO number, look for UMF or MGO labelling.
